Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment
A. Hazard ~ Poor Housekeeping
Risk Assessment
Poor housekeeping and untidiness can create hazards and cause injuries due to slips, trips and falls.
Introduction
Sorohan Electrical is committed to ensuring the Safety of all personnel in any activity associated with our operations.
We also consider it imperative that all employees understand and implement the codes of behaviour set down by the company in an effort to eliminate injury to personnel and damage to property.
This Method Statement has been prepared, in so far as is reasonably practicable, to ensure the Safety Health & Welfare at work of its employees, for the duration of the project and further to ensure that persons not in our employment, who may be affected by our work activities, are not thereby exposed to risks to their safety and health.
We are committed to securing the safety of all. We will provide the necessary resources, structure and procedures which are required to safeguard them against the risks arising from activities for the duration of this work project.
Site Management
Our Project Management team and site personnel will be dedicated to this specific project. The project will be self sufficient and we will report direct to the client design team.
We would expect to attend progress meetings convened by the client on a regular basis.
We expect planning, scheduling, co-ordination and progress to be the main items on the agenda. Initially such meetings will be predominantly related to technical matters and as the job progresses they will mainly apply to construction.
Sorohan Electrical will take due note of any particular conditions in operation on the site in respect of restricted areas, site opening hours, site specific safety rules, etc.
Control Measures
• Good Housekeeping Practices will be insisted upon on site.
• Care and attention will be given to the location of extension cables. Cables and extension leads will be routed where possible to minimise tripping hazards.
• Rubbish or other unnecessary and potentially flammable and combustible materials will be removed on a regular basis.
• Tray, pieces of conduit etc. will also be stored in an orderly fashion in the work area, offcuts will be removed on a regular basis.
b. Access & Egress
Risk Assessment
Access/Egress will be achieved only via the route instructed by the builder.
Control Measures
• All access points, doorways etc. to be kept free of obstructions.
• All designated fire escape routes will be kept clear at all times.
c. Lifting & Handling
Risk Assessment:
We recognise the risk of injury which may arise from handling relatively light items, handling awkward
Loads or handling loads which are too heavy or if poor handling techniques are used:
Control Measures:
• All materials will be carried on to site only via the access scaffolding route provided by the builder.
• Manual handling will be employed where possible.
• Site foreman will be alert to poor practices in manual handling and have instructions to remind employees of the proper techniques where necessary.
• Employees are advised to:
1. Not to move or lift a load which could cause injury. Assistance should be sought where necessary.
2. Not to obstruct their vision when carrying large items.
3. Observe the guidelines in Appendix B.
d. Electricity/Portable Tools:
Risk Assessment/Control Measures:
• All portable electric tools, lighting and motorised equipment, to be operated at a voltage of 110v.
• Transformers if used will be placed at the power source.
• All connections to power points will be made by proper plugs.
• Any signs of damage to or interference with equipment, wires and cables will be checked immediately.
• Cartridge operated tools must only be used when proper eye protection is worn.
• All electric tools and motorised equipment to be operated only in Contractors Compound.
g. Hazard ~ Falling from a Height
Risk Assessment:
The majority of accidents arise as a result of people falling from heights and activities which involve working at a height. These will only continue once controls are in place.
Control Measures
• Ensure that ladders are the right equipment to use for the job, rather than scaffolding, mobile towers, etc.
• All ladders used on site will be in good condition and free from obvious defects.
• Ladders will be secured near the top even if only used for a short time.
• Ladders which cannot be secured at the top must be secured near the bottom, weighted or footed to prevent slipping.
• Step ladders will also be used only in correct manner.
• Employees will not work off the top rungs or straddle step ladders.
• Mobile towers will only be used if they meet the required EU requirements.
• If employees will be required to work at a height where no edge protection is provided then Safety Awareness with Fall Arrest Device 100% of the time must be worn.
